Native Peoples and Early Settlers
Before the arrival of Europeans, various Native American tribes, including the Seminoles, Apalachee, and Timucua, inhabited FL. In 1565, the Spanish founded the city of St. Augustine, which became the first permanent European settlement in continental USA.
Path to Statehood
FL changed hands between the Spanish, English, and French before becoming a U.S. territory in 1821. In 1845, FL became the 27th state of the USA. Throughout its history, the state witnessed many events, including the Seminole Wars and the Civil War.
