Elderly Man with Dementia Vanishes After Early Walk in Nassau County

Missing person in New York.  North Hempstead, New York — A 74-year-old man is missing, and the search is urgent. His name is Zhi Zhu. Authorities say he has dementia and may need medical attention.

He was last seen on the morning of May 18, 2025, around 6:40 a.m. The location was Merrivale Road in University Gardens, Nassau County. He is believed to be traveling on foot.

Since that moment, no one has heard from him.

Who Is Zhi Zhu?

Zhi Zhu is 74 years old. He stands 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs 150 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes. He also wears glasses.

He was last seen wearing a navy jacket, brown pants, and black sneakers. His outfit was simple, but distinct.

Family members say he enjoys walking. However, due to his dementia, he may become disoriented or confused.

What Happened That Morning?

Early on May 18, Mr. Zhu left his home. He often takes short walks in the neighborhood. That day, though, he didn’t return.

At first, relatives thought he might return shortly. But as hours passed, their worry grew.

They searched nearby streets but found no trace of him. Afterward, they contacted the Nassau County Police.

Officers from the 6th Precinct responded immediately. The search effort has grown larger since then.

Why the Situation Is Critical

Zhi Zhu suffers from dementia. That alone makes the situation urgent. He may not remember where he lives.

He also may not ask for help. Confusion could cause him to avoid people or hide.

Additionally, the longer he remains missing, the greater the risk. He could be in danger from traffic, weather, or exhaustion.

Due to his age and condition, time matters. Police and volunteers are moving quickly.

How the Community Can Help

If you see someone matching Mr. Zhu’s description, call immediately. Contact the Nassau County Police Department’s 6th Precinct at 516-573-7347.

Share the time, place, and direction he was walking. Mention his clothing or any unusual behavior.

Even small tips can help. Don’t wait. One call could save a life.

Authorities also ask residents to check doorbell cameras. Review footage from May 18 between 6:00 and 9:00 a.m. Look for someone walking alone in the area.

Family Pleads for Help

Mr. Zhu’s family is devastated. They are doing everything they can to bring him home. “Please help us find our father,” one relative said.

They continue to search on foot, post flyers, and talk to neighbors. The entire community is involved.

You can help. Stay alert. Share his photo. Check parks, trails, and local roads.
